Traducción a tal grado literal, que hasta los refranes están vertidos palabra por palabra; lo mismo ocurre con las poesías, por cuyo motivo resultan los versos duros y faltos de armonía. Ha servido de modelo a gran número de ediciones inglesas posteriores. El traductor suprime la dedicatoria cervantina al Duque de Béjar y algunos versos preliminares. Su valor especial reside, no sólo en ser la primera versión inglesa sino en constituir la primera traducción del Quijote a una lengua extranjera, así como en su gran rareza, ya que de esta edición, desconocida durante muchos años, sólo se conocen hoy dos ejemplares: uno incompleto que se guarda como preciosa joya en el Museo Británico, y otro, muy bien conservado, que forma parte de la rica Colección cervantista Isidro Bonsoms.
